Have you been on your computer and your mind begins to wonder effortlessly? Thoughts, ideas, curiosities, visions come in and out of your consciousness. You can’t focus on the dozen or so windows/programs you have open. You see the work in front of you, you know what needs to be done, yet your mind has escaped your control and is now in a realm I like to call NETDREAMING.
You begin looking online for curiosities. You cant lock down on anything of interest. It seems nothing is exciting your mind. Your mind has now arrived at that mysterious place called “Tangetville”
A few Internet visionist tapped in on this realm of NETDREAMING and created the world of SOCIAL NETWORKING.
I signed up for a few accounts, created lengthy profiles, and was NOW officially part of the Social Networking movement. After a few hours of Social Net’ing, I thought to myself : “what am I doing”? I manage several web servers at various data centers, I manage 100’s of websites, domain names, web accounts, on and on…I am making a 180 degree turn towards new and alternative energy concepts, studying astrophysics, launching green sites, and researching ideas that come to my mind. What am I doing”
So I then deleted the accounts. Yes, your reading this correct. I signed up on 3 of the more popular Social Networking sites, created profiles, read my profiles, edited my profiles, continued to juice each one up with “ego juice”, read and re-read my profiles, and finally DELETED each account. I reflected on what just happened immediately after deleting the accounts. I first noticed 6 or 7 hours had pasted. I focused entirely on myself, my achievements, education, and interest while creating my profiles. I started comparing my profiles to others. I started viewing the profiles of Internet professionals located in my area. I started reading what they were doing; who their friends and followers were; what they were doing; on and on and on. I was unable to control my actions. I couldn’t focus. I had no place to start, nor could I see where I would stop. I was on an unknown street in the town of “Tangetville”. I had no map, no direction, and no guidance. I WAS NOW LOST.
I had ventured upon the realm of INFINITY.
My reason was this:
I found Social Networking users to take several common paths of interest; one may be work related, one may be club or association related, one may be friends and community related, one may be dating and relationship related……
I was placing focus and interest in things of little or no importance pertaining to the 180 degree turn I am making. Simply put, I am utilizing energy with no direction thus placing myself below equilibrium. It appeared net users utilized Social Networking to gain insight on other net users, what they where doing, what their interest are, what they like, who were their friends, who was in there list of followers, and what their friends and followers were doing.
With no scale of experience to measure, I asked myself: “Why I am placing this conclusion solely on my actions? Is it Social Media sites or is it my behavior? Did the Social Media sites force me to sign up OR did I sign up BEACUSE this is what everyone else is doing? Am I missing out on something?
So here I am now. I have yet to re-activate the Social Networking accounts I created for the sole reason I cannot justify utilizing energy for the purpose of self promotion of nothingness leading to noisiness.
